Synonyms
2-Hydroxy-5-[[4-[(2-pyridinylamino)sulfonyl]phenyl]azo]benzoic acid

Sulfasalazine is a drug that has a basic structure and is composed of two parts: the amino acid 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and sulfapyridine. It helps to reduce inflammation by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins. Sulfasalazine also inhibits DNA synthesis in some cancer cells, including colon cancer cells. This drug also binds to α1-acid glycoprotein, which is involved in allergic reactions and infectious diseases. Sulfasalazine can be used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfasalazine is an anti-inflammatory medication that relieves symptoms of ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases by reducing the amount of prostaglandins in the body. Sulfasalazine works by preventing certain enzymes from working properly in your body to produce prostaglandins, which are substances that cause pain .
Sulfasalazine is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) used to treat and manage autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and an inflammatory bowel disease called ulcerative colitis .

Applications of CAS NO:599-79-1 Sulfasalazine
1.Management of Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis that affects the spine, can also be managed with Sulfasalazine . It helps to reduce the symptoms of this condition, including chronic pain and stiffness.
2.Research in Brain-Related Diseases
Recent research has shown that Sulfasalazine has beneficial effects in brain-related diseases . It has potent cysteine/glutamate antiporter system xc- (SXC) inhibition, which has shown beneficial effects in these conditions .
3.Adjunctive Therapy in Treating Pulmonary Pre-XDR-TB
Sulfasalazine has been evaluated as an adjunctive therapy in treating pulmonary pre-extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (pre-XDR-TB) . By targeting the amino acid transport system xc (xCT), it potentially reduces the intracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis load and mitigates lung pathology .
