Polyquaternium salts are a large category of cationic surfactants. They are made of polymers synthesized by grafting quaternized fatty alkyl groups on modified natural polymers (sugars, cellulose, proteins) or cationic monomers containing double bonds. Polyquaternium-55 is a cationic ternary polymer copolymerized by vinyl pyrrolidone, dimethylaminopropyl acrylamide and dodecyl dimethylpropyl methacrylamide ammonium chloride. It is often used as a hair setting agent and antistatic agent, and has a color protection effect on oxidative hair dyes. Some other semi-synthetic polyquaternium salts, such as polyquaternium-10, which is cationic hydroxyethyl cellulose, are semi-synthetic polyquaternium salts. They are made by reacting hydroxyethyl cellulose and 2,3-propylene oxide trimethyl ammonium chloride. They have a cellulose skeleton. Through the quaternization modification of hydroxyethyl cellulose, multiple cationic sites are generated. The end groups of anions on the surfactant can be attracted to these cationic sites. It is reported that it has good conditioning properties only when the dosage is above 0.8%. Deposition occurs after repeated washing, which makes the hair dry.
